Artemisa became into the 13th province of the country because of its extension (it only surpasses Mayabeque and Havana provinces) and the 11th because of its population (surpassing Cienfuegos, Santic Spiritus, Ciego de Avila and Mayabeque provinces). It is also the most densely populated province except for Havana and Santiago de Cuba provinces. It borders on the West with Pinar del Río province, on the North with the Florida Strait and the Golf of Mexico, on the South with the Golf of Batabanó and on the East share borders with Havana and Mayabeque provinces.

Artemisa’s population is of about 502 392 inhabitants and its surface area is of 4 thousand 004.27 km2. It has an agricultural area of 272,849 hectares, 68.1% of the territory, which allows it to produce food to meet its demand and support the capital.
