The nature in Cienfuegos is varied and abundant. It has marine ecosystems, coasts and mountains of great biological diversity, which influence their flora and fauna. Here we present the natural sites that you should not miss when visiting our region:
Twenty minutes by car from the city of Cienfuegos is the wildlife refuge Laguna Guanaroca - Gavilán, ideal place for bird watching, among which are the pink flamingo colonies, the cartacuba and the Tocororo, which is the Ave National. The tour is made on foot the first part and then in small rowboats that will take you to see very closely the natural habitat of several of these species.
Nearby is also the Botanical Garden, the oldest in Cuba, located in areas surrounding the town of Pepito Tey, previously named central Soledad del Muerto. Today, more than 2000 species of plants can be appreciated in this territory, representing 670 genera of 125 families, mostly arboreal; approximately 70% of the specimens are exotic. The garden is also a recognized center for scientific research. The guided tour takes place through the various areas of the garden that includes a solarium and a greenhouse. You can also enjoy a varied cuisine with Cuban food.
Another of the natural wonders that delight any visitor are the landscapes of the Guamuhaya mountain range. This site, previously known as Sancti Spíritus - Trinidad heights, is the most important mountain group in the center of Cuba and is characterized by high peaks and deep valleys, lush vegetation, endemic species of flora and fauna, its jumps of water and pocetas, and the coffee plantations that adorn these places. The economy of the area is based on coffee production, the cultivation of tobacco and citrus, forestry and livestock. The visit to these mountains allows to know the rural life associated with the cultivation of coffee and other agricultural activities, in addition to capturing the visitor with the attractive nature, for that reason we recommend that you visit El Nicho Natural Park just an hour and a half from our city.
On the way to Trinidad you can also visit the Hacienda La Vega where you can taste the creole cheese, as well as horse riding to learn about our flora and fauna. At the end of this tour you will have the opportunity to enjoy a refreshing swim in a small beach known as the Caleta de Castro, as well as a typical Cuban lunch.
The beaches, are also another attraction of the area, just 18 km from the city of Cienfuegos there is the beautiful beach of Rancho Luna, its sand is fine and soft, its waters bathed by the blue of the Caribbean Sea. It is one of the best places for snorkeling and diving because of the variety of sunken ships, tunnels and the large number of fish and corals that live there. It can also be interesting to visit the dolphinarium for those who like to live a unique experience with these wonderful mammals.
Other beaches in the area, such as Guajimico, Playa Inglés and Yaguanabo, are also seductive due to their beauty. They are all on the road to Trinidad.
And last but not least, we recommend a visit to the Bay of Jagua, the same one that surrounds the city. The best visuals can be obtained from several points of the city but the unique experience will be through the different tours offered by the Marlin Marina that will allow you not only to know its history but to share with the inhabitants of this area.
