Mayabeque is one of the four provinces, along with Havana, Camagüey and Guantánamo with a name of aboriginal origin, which reinforces the Cuban cultural tradition. It occupies the fourteenth place in extension among the provinces with 3,743.8 square kilometers, representing 3.40 percent of the total area of the country. Regarding its name, the legend refers to the Habanaguex chiefdom in the south of Havana, and Mayabeque was the autochthonous name of the river that irrigates the fertile valley where several of the Mayan municipalities are based today, although according to several accounts, the Siboneys aborigines also baptized it with the name of Güinicajinal or as it is known today `` Güines ''.
