Plaza Hotel from Camagüey is refurbished

Plaza Hotel from Camagüey, the oldest hotel of this city, has taken advantage form the restauration of its first floor and the most area of its surrounding. It receives this year with a renewed image. Regarding the railway boulevard opening, in the area where used to be the city’s old railway station and taking as a symbol the development of this means of transportation, the hotel of 67 rooms offers to the public new options in the restaurant, in the coffee shop, in the lobby bar and in the store. Founded in 1907, the Plaza Hotel is one of the most emblematic accommodations of Camagüey’s historic center, city that will be 505 years of foundation this 2019.

In order to celebrate this date works keep on their way at the hotel’s surroundings along with the Railway Thematic Museum Project at the old railway station. Important personalities of the Cuban’s culture and universal lodged in this hotel such as the Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral, Nobel Prize for Literature, the Cuban novelist Carlos Loveira and the well-known father of the Cuban radio-soap, Félix B. Caignet. The first radio-broadcasting of Camagüey province was relayed from this facility with the launch of the first radio-broadcaster 7AZ from the Hotel Plaza’s Roof Garden on January 16th, 1924.

During the second half of the 20th century, the facility was fading and loosing its values as tourist accommodation. It was reopened on December 6th, 1990 after an intense restoring process; and nowadays it boasts the two-star category. Its main markets are the entrepreneurial Cuban sector and tourists coming from Canada, Germany, Holland and Spain.
