Dance in Santiago de Cuba
Dance in Santiago de Cuba is related to the history of the popular and traditional culture and to the way of the santiaguero, because the santiagueros and santiagueras are moved in different way; there are universal codes in the art of dancing but what the identity and what the santiaguero way of being provides is something unique and phenomenal.
The most famous dance companies in Santiago de Cuba are the Teatro de la Danza del Caribe, under the direction of the late Eduardo Rivero Walker, the Folkloric Ballet Cutumba and Kokoye. The Tumba Francesa has a place too, since its dances perpetuated throughout 8 generations of French-Haitian slave descendants are distinguished by its similarity to the French-style dances and dresses. This led them to their declaration as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2003.
