Protected Areas in Santiago de Cuba

Santiago de Cuba has 17% of its land within the National System of Natural Protected Areas of the Science, Technology and Environment Ministry. Among them is the Turquino National Park, where is located the most defiant peak of the island: Pico Real del Turquino (1974 meters above sea level) located in the emblematic mountain mass, the Sierra Maestra.

It’s visible the Baconao Protected Area of Managed Resources, which covers 80,000 hectares from the Santiago City to the Guantanamo Province. This natural protected area is home to the Siboney-Justicí Ecological Reserve. Its rich biodiversity founds shelter in 33 caves and coastal scrubs that house a lot of wildlife of bats with a total of 18 species. Pines, giant bushes and fruit trees surround the Gran Piedra, and its cavern system is formed by 47 caves and the Cueva de los Majaes is the warmest in the country. The Grand Piedra was declared World Biosphere Reserve.
