Guantánamo, before 1976, was a region of the old Oriente province, and as a result of the political-administrative division carried out that same year, the province emerged, with 10 municipalities: Guantánamo, Baracoa, El Salvador, Yateras, Maisí, Imías, San Antonio del Sur, Manuel Tames, Caimanera, Niceto Pérez; and with population settlements of interest in the national order, such as the city of Guantánamo, the provincial capital and fifth in the country in terms of population and the city of Baracoa, second in importance for the province.
