 In Cuba you can exchange the following currencies: Canadian dollar, British pound, Mexican peso, Swiss franc, euro, Danish krone, Norwegian krone, Swedish krona, Japanese yen, Cuban peso and US dollar.


The national currency in Cuba is the Cuban Peso (CUP). The Cuban Convertible Peso (CUC) also circulates, used as a means of exchanging foreign currencies according to officially established exchange rates. Consult the website of the Banco Metropolitano de Cuba:

CUCs are not valid or exchangeable outside of Cuban territory. When leaving the country you can change your excess money to euros or dollars again. If it is in dollars, the 10 percent tax is not applied. There is no airport departure fee.

VISA and MASTERCARD credit cards are accepted as long as they have not been issued by US banks or their affiliates. With both cards you can withdraw money at Banks, CADECAS and ATMs. Bear in mind that: If the branch of the bank that issued your card in your country is a United States bank, your card will NOT be accepted.

Traveler Checks are not exchanged.

MLC Prepaid Cards

Travelers who visit Cuba and have credit or debit cards that are not accepted in Cuban businesses, may request a prepaid card in the national territory.

This prepaid card is valid for the payment of goods and services in the commercial network in freely convertible currency MLC in Cuba.


Identification document: foreign passport, and cash amount: worth 1000 USD, 500 USD or 200 USD, to recharge the prepaid card.


It has a cost per value of 5.00 USD per card.

Prepaid procedures may be requested at: Banco de Crédito y Comercio (BANDEC) and Casas de Cambio S.A. (CADECA)

How much is the amount with which the cards can be recharged?

The prepaid card for travelers and tourists in Cuba can be loaded with cash amounts of 1000 USD, 500 USD or 200 USD.

According to the amount with which the card has been recharged, the customer will be given a card that will have the amount printed. Once the amount loaded on the prepaid card is exhausted, it will stop working until it is reloaded, or it expires.

In what currency can prepaid cards for travelers and tourists be recharged?

Travelers may request prepaid cards in Cuba exclusively, depositing cash in foreign currencies accepted by the Central Bank of Cuba: euros, British pounds, Canadian dollars, Swiss francs, Mexican pesos, Danish crowns, Norwegian crowns, Swedish crowns and Japanese yen ; except US dollars USD.

The cards are not associated with a bank account.

Where can prepaid cards be used for travelers and tourists in Cuba?

Prepaid cards may be used in the commercial network in freely convertible currency MLC, to purchase goods and services until the amount that has been deposited is exhausted.

Can withdrawals be made in cash, in USD or another foreign currency from prepaid cards ?:

No. Cash withdrawals can only be made in Cuban pesos (CUP), in the country's ATM network.

However, if you have a balance left on your card when you leave Cuba, I can request it at CADECA at the airport. At the client's request, the balance of the card is reimbursed by card in freely convertible currency (MLC) at international airports when leaving the country.

If you have a balance left on your prepaid card when you leave Cuba, you will not be able to use it abroad. The prepaid card that can be obtained in Cuba is for exclusive use in the national territory.

When do prepaid cards for travelers and tourists expire?

Prepaid cards cannot be requested by Cuban nationals and permanent residents in Cuba. The prepaid card is designed exclusively for travelers and tourists traveling to Cuba.

In case of loss of the prepaid card, the replacement cannot be claimed from the bank. The bank will not be responsible for the loss of the prepaid card, because these cards will not have the bearer's name printed, being the same anonymous. Nor are they associated with a bank account. Therefore, in case of loss, the bearer of the prepaid card loses the amount they have on it.

What are the benefits of the prepaid cards offered in Cuba to travelers and tourists?

Travelers who only have cards issued by US banks may acquire them to use them in the commercial network in USD, throughout the national territory, to acquire goods and services that cannot be paid for in cash.

It allows you to control your expenses on the trip to Cuba.

They can be loaded with successive recharges.

It does not compromise your debit or credit bank cards due to theft or loss, and the risk would be exclusively the amount you have on the prepaid card in USD.

It is not required to have a bank account for your application.

You can not make transfers or deposits from abroad to prepaid cards. These cards will not accept deposits or transfers from abroad, or between similar cards or other cards that operate in dollars.

How to check the status of the prepaid card in Cuba?
