Geography
Pinar del Rio is in the western side of Cuban provinces; the waters of the Gulf of Mexico bath its shores by the north while the Caribbean Sea does it by the south. The Yocatan Strait separates Cuba from the continent; in the east it limits with the Artemisa province.

The relief in Pinar del Rio, described from its center, has the Organos Hills and on the east side has the Rosario Hills with heights of more than 600 meters, both conform the mountain Range of Guaniguanico, aligned southeast-northeast. The Seboruco Knoll is there, that with 671 meters is the highest point in the province. The hydromorphic soils predominate in the low coastal areas, in the rest of the territory the ferralitics, brown and the slightly evolved ones are combined, offering a nice reddish sand hue.
The hydrography of Pinar del Rio is characterized by short and thigh rivers, like the Cuyaguateje of 112 km long and a total area of 723 km². This river is born in the heights of Pizarras del Sur on the mountain range of Guaniguanico, at 22°26’ north latitude and 83°51’ east length, height of 300 meters, and ends at Cortes cove in the form of a cusp delta. There are also the Hondo, Ajiconal and San Diego rivers; there are a large number of lagoons, among them Santa Maria, El Pesquero, Alcatraz Grande and Algodonal; The main reservoirs are El Salto, La Paila and Pedernales.
