Pedro Pablo Oliva Rodríguez is today considered one of the maximum exponents of paint on the country. His work is a neo-expressionist style, with a great mastery of color and a palette of great chromatic diversity. In his paintings he usually shows children, animals and fantastic figures.
Photography
Cuban photographers have the privilege of having one of the richest works of Latin America because of the great variety of expressive styles and high quality of artistic and informative technique. A clear example is Arturo Montoto, Cuban painter, carver and photographer, born in Pinar del Rio in 1953. He is member of the Writers and Artists Union of Cuba. He has developed an artistic career with smart and provocative proposals and although he has earned success in several genres, in painting he just wants to find a way to incite the observer to reflect towards life and art. He has received several awards; his creations have illustrated and have been referenced in numerous magazines and books in several countries of the world.
Crafts
The Pinar del Rio brand of the Cuban Fund for Cultural Property presents a selection of furniture, ceramics, textiles and metal works, among other proposals of its creators. The province is represented by Jesús Carrete, of the Art in Family Project, in the manifestation of furniture; by Alejandro Blanco, Boris D. Herrera and Yosvany Diaz in various crafts; Daniel Robaina, in the ceramics demonstration; Pedro Díaz and Yarilis Ríos in footwear; Blanca Perez with a sample of dolls; Ana M. Alvarez with a proposal of textiles; Yoel Arms in the metal manifestation and Sarah T. Vigil in the manifestation of miscellaneous. This variety has made possible the participation in National Fairs as Art for Mom, which is published every year.
The project “Pinar and its Art” is the representative name of a collective undertaking that brings together the groups Márquez Loynaz, Collective MACUBA, group J. Garrido, Los Chapuserios and the artists Osvaldo Jáuregui, Victor Cuní and William Carlos Álvarez. Shows excellence mainly in the furniture and ceramics genre.
Events
Pinar del Rio, full of festivities, is a cultural promise to the tourist. In several times of the year you can participate on different events. Among them stands out “El Jolgorio”, cultural evening that takes place on November 27th of each year, dedicated to the important singer-songwriter Polo Montañés, one of the most authentic exponents of traditional peasant music.
“Entre Mogotes” Festival arrives this year to its 4th edition, offers during 3 days a show of the cultural local product. It counts with plastic arts expositions, theatrical plays and dace, and other artistic manifestations. Likewise Viñales Moda, shows the best traditions of clothing of all the región of Vueltabajo, the Benito Hernández Cabrera contest, at Viñales, dedicated to the Valley Singer, which gathers improvisers and other fans and the Municipal Carnivals, weekly festive days that are held in all municipalities.
The capital is the place for the development of the Hermanos Loynaz contest, prestigious event in which Cuban writers participate with unpublished books in the genres of: children's literature, narrative and poetry.
The International Book Fair, feast of the intellect that is the most welcome and attractive: a tradition of this century with expo-sales that demonstrates the great cultural concerns of the town, developed in March and the annual Guarapachanga event, music and other demonstrations, sponsored by UNEAC and Developed in the city of Pinar del Rio. Finally, the Lecuona National Singing Contest In Memoriam: sponsored by the Lyric Theater Company Ernesto Lecuona is biennial and is a tribute to the Master Lecuona considered the most important composer of Cuban musical and theater history, founder of the Cuban Lyric Theater, which is based in the old José Jacinto Milanés Theatre in Pinar del Rio.
The community project “El Patio Pelegrín” joins to these celebrations. It works since its creation as a place, where the different manifestations of art are combined, integrating this space to the community: fabric, dance, pastry, nursing, plastic arts, literature, music and environment, are some of the manifestations and trades that can be learned or enjoyed by both the children and adults who meet in this "paradise".
