Morro - Cabaña Historical Military Park - The largest museum in the country
Currently the Fortresses of San Carlos de la Cabaña and the older Morro Castle compose the Morro - Cabaña Historical Military Park, the largest museum in the country. Two permanent exhibitions showcase the history of navigation in Havana Harbor with exhibits of objects salvaged from a ship that sank at the harbor´s entrance in the 18th century. The Park also hosts temporary exhibits on a variety of themes.
Located at the entrance of Havana Bay, this legendary fortress is the most significant of all in the Cuban capital, not only because of its military importance, but also for its prevalence as a lighthouse and symbol of the city.
It was built in the late 16th century by the Italian engineer Jean Bautista Antonelli, to provide the emerging Village of San Cristobal de La Habana with a fortress capable of defending it from the constant attacks of corsairs and pirates. Its strategically privileged position was recognized as early as the Havana harbour became a regular stop to the Spaniard fleets.
Currently, Morro-Cabaña Complex - it is a place to visit. There are bars, snack bars, restaurants, such as The Divina Pastora or The Twelve Apostles.
