During the Spanish Colonia and after the rising of Carlos Manuel de Cespedes on October 10th, a brave man from Las Tunas called Vicente Garcia went to war against Spain on the 13 of that same month and assaulted the city, taking its strong points. As part of the east of the country, the tuneros fought bravely, reducing the fortified city to ashes, partially in 1869 and completely in 1876 and 1897.
Among the most outstanding characters of Las Tunas history are the Mayor General Vicente Garcia, known as the Lion of Santa Rita, the greatest promoter of the fight for the independence of the territory, the General Juan Fernandez Ruz and the Mayor General Francisco Varona Gonzalez.
Later, during the fights against the dictatorship of governments that serve interests outside Cuban’s, some important events happened in the territory, including the assault to the headquarters of the Tigres de Mansferrer on September 15, 1958.
With the Cuban Revolution,Las Tunas becomes a province in 1976. With the development of its economy, culture and education,the Balcony of Cuban Eastern region inhabitants create day by day a safe and harmonious place where life happens a little bit slower in order to enjoy it better.
