Visual Arts in Las Tunas, Cuba
Many consider Las Tunas the mecca of the national sculpture movement. Encounters between the most illustrious sculptors of the Revolutionary Period were held here, resulting in the agreement of donating pieces to embellish the province. This led to the Sculpture movement’s posterior boom.

The Antilles Fountain
This sculpture has become the symbol of the city. It belongs to the sculptor Rita Longa Arostegui and was inaugurated in 1977. This piece symbolizes the legend of the Cacique Jaias, told by the Colon’s chronicler, Pedro de Angleria, which narrates the birth of the Antilles. Four connected figures, supported with difficult balance on aquatic plants, hold the pumpkin, symbol of the myth.
“Rita Longa” Sculpture Biennial
This is an event that takes place every two years to keep the city’s sculptor tradition alive. Through several practical workshops, numerous artistic pieces are created to embellish the city, parks and plazas. The artists participate in this event and donate their work to put it in different spots of the city, as a way of making each one of the inhabitants their accomplices. This is just one more of the reasons why Las Tunas is known as the Cuban Capital of Sculpture.
